Who developed this tool
This tool is the result of an extensive collaboration between the Danish Institute for Human Rights and 24 institutions and organizations including the United Nations, national human rights institutions, statistical offices, civil society organizations and human rights defenders’ networks.
The Right to Defend Rights monitoring tool is developed by the Danish Institute for Human Rights in collaboration with an Expert Reference Group (ERG), including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The ERG is composed of institutions and organisations representing a variety of stakeholder groups that bring different areas of expertise to this work. They provided technical feedback in all steps of the development of the tool, most significantly to the indicator framework and the assessments. Overall, they play an important role in:
- Securing the relevance of the tool for key stakeholders and human rights defenders
- Developing an engaged stakeholder base for using the indicator framework
- Ensuring effective co-ordination with and complementarity to other relevant monitoring efforts
