Who manages this tool

The Right to Defend Rights monitoring tool will be managed by a coalition of organizations and institutions, the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee is comprised to date of:

  • Danish Institute for Human Rights
  • Senior Advisor to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders
  • Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
  • Forus International
  • Women's Major Groups
  • International Land Coalition
  • Asia Pacific Forum (APF)

The Steering Committee is responsible for steering the processes related to:

  • Decisions regarding future development of the tool, including updating assessments and development of new modules

  • Decisions related to the global use of the data, including conducting data analysis and publishing reports

  • Joint fundraising for the roll out of the tool

  • Outreach with relevant stakeholders and fora

  • Advocacy to influence global process on monitoring the enabling environment for human rights defenders

In addition, the Steering Committee members may also act as advisors on their respective areas of expertise in the shape of a working group or as focal points for the thematic areas covered in the tool.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights is the technical host of the tool in terms of the IT solutions and provides technical management, updates, and support, in co-operation with its IT providers.

The Committee is chaired by one of its members in a rotating manner. The Chair’s responsibilities include formulating yearly workplans together with the members of the Committee; steering the group to perform its tasks; and organizing and calling for meetings when necessary. The Danish Institute for Human Rights acts as the first Chair for the term 2023 – 2024.
